Overview

While pursuing the M.Div. at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, I worked as Learning Partner(s) Coordinator in the Language Resource & Writing Center. This role focused on helping students thrive academically through support, guidance, and relationship-centered engagement, especially international and multilingual students navigating graduate theological education in English and in a particular U.S. academic context.

My Role

My work in the Learning Resource & Writing Center combined direct student support with coordination, communication, and workshop leadership. I had the honor of assisting, advising, and supporting students on their academic journey, particularly those whose first language was not English. I also enjoyed teaching Spanish, supporting summer gatherings, and contributing to a wider culture of academic and intercultural accompaniment.

Academic Support & Student Accompaniment

This work was not only about writing or language mechanics. It was also about helping students feel more confident, capable, and supported in a demanding graduate environment. The LSTC-related public narrative emphasizes accompaniment, encouragement, and practical support for international students, which aligns well with the seminary’s broader public-church and formation-oriented environment.

Workshops, Language, & Intercultural Learning

We developed a strong workshop and language-teaching component. Including presentations about Colombia at the LRWC, summer program gatherings, Spanish classes for international students, and selected talks and workshops connected to migration, resilience, and interpretation. Together, these materials and initiatives suggest a role that extended beyond tutoring into educational facilitation, language access, and intercultural learning.

Leadership in the LSTC Seminary & Community

This work was part of a broader leadership presence at LSTC and was connected to the Public Church Fellowship Program, the International Students Association, the Antiracism Transformation Team, and the Latinx Strategy of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod. That wider involvement strengthens the narrative of this page and the amazing experience as a student and immigrant. I was not only supporting students academically, but also helping shape community, belonging, and public engagement in the LSTC seminary context.

Why It Mattered?

This experience deepened your strengths in accompaniment, facilitation, intercultural communication, and educational support. It is also connected directly to the kind of leadership I continue to bring across other settings with clear communication, cross-cultural bridge-building, and practical support that helps diverse multicultural people/communities grow with confidence in complex institutional/political environments.

Key Contributions:

  • Academic support and student accompaniment

  • International and multilingual student engagement

  • Workshop facilitation and educational support

  • Spanish teaching and intercultural learning

  • Community-building within graduate theological education

  • Relationship-centered communication and guidance

“My work at LSTC strengthened my experience in academic support, workshop facilitation, multilingual student engagement, and intercultural leadership, helping international and U.S. students navigate graduate education with greater confidence, belonging, and mutual support…”
